Locality & Transport

The Campan valley is situated next to the Pyrenees National Park and Park de Neouvielle. Ideally placed centrally in the mountains, it is within easy reach of both the coasts – Atlantic (2 hours) and Mediterranean (3 hours) .

Masison Lacoste is also ideally placed within the valley being equal distance from both the local town Bagneres De Bigorre and the mountains including the  Cols De Tourmalet and Aspin.

The nearest large towns are Tarbes ( ½ hour) and Pau ( 1 hour) – well worth a visit or vibrant Toulouse 2 hours away. This makes access easy with airports at Tarbes/Lourdes, Pau and Toulouse. Fast trains serve the area to all parts of France and of course Spain. If you fancy lunch in Spain it is 2 hours from the house to the border!

This is undoubtedly a most beautiful part of France with spectacular mountains with their associated lakes, waterfalls and rivers and soft green valleys. A haven for both animal and bird watchers, the flora and fauna are many and varied. The parks contain Izards, deer, boar, bears, marmots and the rare and indigenous Desman. Birds of prey abound including buzzards, eagles and many types of vulture including the rare Lammergeir and  the Capercaillie. The Campan valley itself is famous for its wild flowers in spring and you can see most varieties in our meadow including 2 types of orchid. We even have Edelwiess growing next to our stream!

Further afield you can visit a number of grottos – our own being 10 minutes away -and of course the many thermes in the area for a relaxing soak!

Here are some from 10 minutes – 2 hours drive to whet your appetite:

Cycling/riding/walking all round the area including Cirque De Garvanie, Lac Bleu and the Haute Randonnees, Ski resorts (Downhill, cross country, raquetting) of Tourmalet, St Lary Soulan, Luz Ardidan, Garvanie, Piau Engaly, Cauterets, Peyragudes, Val louron; Outings  to view birds of prey, flora and fauna of the parks, Cathar castles, gorges of Ariege, Basque country, Spanish Pyrenees, Walled towns including Liziers, St Bertrand De Comminges and of course Carcassonne.

There are fetes, exhibitions and spectacles all year round but especially in the summer with a local fete nearby every week. The largest spectacle is the Tour De France which some years goes right past the house and others just 5 minutes up the mountain.

To do the area justice it is a good idea to hire a car. There are buses from Campan up and down the mountains but in summer they are not very frequent and there are so many things to see and do, it would be a shame to miss out. For those who don’t drive however, there are regular navettes up and down our mountain in winter and you can walk straight onto the mountains from the house in summer.
