Summer/Winter Activities

This area of France is famous for its stunning scenery and multitude of activities to enjoy. Walkers have hundreds of miles of paths and mountain slopes to expore – either using one of the many local guides or on your own. You can access these from our front door. In fact for the flora enthusiasts you need go no further than our meadow to find a huge range of wild flowers in spring. For the more adventurous, the Pyrenean Randonees are a short drive away and there is always rock climbing if you like a real challenge.

You can participate in almost any other outdoor activity either in the locality or a little further away.
Parapenting is available in Campan or further up the valley in Payolle. Cycling is of course a favourite with many bike hire shops in the locality. You may prefer horse riding in the beautiful Lesponne valley next door or head for the water for a little kayaking or white water rafting . There is so much to choose from, we will be happy to help advise you or book guides and suggest itineraries.

Of course although the summer is wonderful, autumn with its wonderful colours and soft sunny days or spring with the amazing flowers and no crowds are also a great time to visit!

The Pyrenees really come into their own in the winter. The mountains are stunning covered in snow and for the sports enthusiasts, there are no end of resorts and activities to enjoy.

The most popular activity of course is Alpine Skiing/Snowboarding. With easy access to many ski resorts, you will be spoilt for choice. Our own resort of Grand Tourmalet which incorporates La Mongie on our side of the Col De Tourmalet and Bareges on the other is the largest in the Pyrenees and the most snow sure and is only 15 mins from the house. St Lary is 1.5 hours drive and if you like smaller resorts,  Garvanie, Cauterets, Piau Engaly, Luz Ardidan and Peyreguades are easily accessible for a days visit. Cross country skiing and raquetting (Snow Shoeing) are also popular here with the nearest resort of Payolle only 20 minutes away.

All the usual facilities are available at the resorts including ski schools and après ski although it is never as busy as the Alps and of course it is much cheaper. With a ski hire shop almost next door, we can order and collect your equipment for you and have it ready for your arrival to beat those queues!
